Each year perfidious Paradine and heroic St George fight for supremacy but although Paradine always wins the battle, he never wins the war. Whilst St George is reputed to win the fair lady there is more to the story than is immediately obvious. This Long Company video monologue tells something of the back story behind this warring pair, in a style owing a little to Marriott Edgar but not so much to the traditional legend.
The piece premieres on YouTube at 8pm (UT) on January 5th.
This year, in the absence of an opportunity to perform our Long Company play as accustomed, we give you an insight into the minds of some of our characters.
Find out what Old King Christmas thinks about modern Christmas, how St George hopes to combat new threats, how the prince of Paradine feels a little under-appreciated, what angers Common Jack, and how the Doctor sees his place in the new order of things.
Our video will premiere at 8pm on Sunday January 2nd when we would normally be at The Hogshead in Sowerby Bridge or perhaps The Fleece in Elland. As it is we’re outside the YouTube Arms and you’re welcome to join us for an alternative view of the world seen through the eyes of the Long Company characters.
Happy New Year to you all. For the last 25 years or so, the Long Company has brought its atmospheric Mummers play to pubs around Calderdale on the first few days of the new year.Sadly, we have had to cancel this year’s performances .However, we have planned some Mummers activity to remind ourselves of the great performances and cracking pub sessions that have taken place over the years.
This evening’s offering is an illustrated presentation by Pete Coe on the origins of the Long Company and the distinctive features of our play. This will take place live at 8 pm (via Zoom, details below) lasts for about 15 to 20 minutes and will be followed by an opportunity to talk to Pete about the Long Company, his own recollections of the Mummers in his native Cheshire and any other issues you would like to raise.
No registration required, just click on the URL or type in the ID and Password. (Any problems, please contact Sue Coe on 01422 822569 or firstname.lastname@example.org).
Other activities are planned for Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings brought to you through our Youtube channel. Full details to follow shortly.
