The last Wednesday of the month is normally Ryburn Folk Club night, but not in these times of Lockdown. So we thought we would try out a ‘Virtual House Concert’ on 27 May and invited George Sansome to give us a preview of his debut CD “George Sansome” using Zoom.
25 people tuned in from various places – UK and North America – and were delighted by George’s playing of songs from the CD, interspersed with discussion of his approach to selecting the songs and creating the arrangements. He explained how he wanted it to be a solo performance CD and that’s what we got last night – just him and his guitar – and it was marvellous. I was overwhelmed by the sheer professionalism: George’s guitar work was faultless, his singing was perfect, and all done to an audience on the other side of a computer screen.

Before George started his session, we had a couple of songs from Ryburn Folk Club Residents Sue Burgess and Tim Edwards. Again, it’s difficult to sing to a computer screen, but it worked, and we could almost imagine being in the Folk Club as usual. Thank you Sue and Tim, we know it can be done now!
This was the second of Ryburn 3 Step’s ‘Virtual Sessions’ using Zoom which are providing a way for us to provide music and song that friends and colleagues can enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. They help us keep in touch with our community and, importantly, support singers and musicians who have lost a considerable part of their income from live performances and concerts. It’s a very different experience from what we are used to, but given the constraints we are all under it seems to be working well, so we are planning to continue with more ‘Virtual House Concerts’ and ‘Virtual Sessions’ using Zoom.
We’ll post news of more ‘virtual activities’ here on our Website, and we hope to ‘see’ you with us online soon!
